Fighting the Battle Against Yourself
Jesus died so that we could have a very personal relationship with our Father in heaven. And we will have to give an account of how we have chosen to live our lives. What are we going to say about how we have loved?
You see, there is a war going on! And as 1 Cor. 13 reminds me, it is not only the war between good and evil but also the war between the selfishness of the fallen human race and the agape love of God that knows no selfishness at all. And we are right in the thick of it!
Am I concerned about winning the war? Or will I go AWOL because the battle was too great for me? In this battle, Christ calls us to fight on His side! This is the one thing worth living for!
Jesus says, in essence, “See how much I can make you like Me before you walk through my front door.” I am at an age in life where I have begun to seriously take stock of my life and decide which battles I am going to fight. There are many battles to fight, but this battle against self is the most important one. If all that will last is love, then, love should be my goal.
“There are three things that will endure—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love” (1 Cor. 13:13). So I must make love my aim. Will I be able to look God in the eye one day and say, “I was there fighting away to be more loving than hateful, more patient than angry. I do not want to bow my head in shame and say, “I was fighting to get my own way.” After Jesus rose, He sent us the Helper, The Holy Spirit, to enable us to win the fight against self!!
